Legal notice
This site explains what California's community association election statutes require and reproduces their text. It does not tell you what to do about your own election, and reading it does not put anyone on your side of a dispute.
This is not legal advice
We are not attorneys and this is not a law practice. Nothing published here is legal advice, and reading it, writing to us, or engaging us as inspector of elections does not create an attorney-client relationship — there is no attorney to have one with.
The pages describe what statutes require in general. They cannot account for your governing documents, your association's history, a dispute already underway, or any fact particular to you — and those are usually what the answer turns on. Anything contested, unusual or consequential belongs with a California attorney who acts for your association.
Where the line falls in our own work
A rules check tells you where your procedure departs from what the statutes require and which deadline each item sits behind. It is not a legal opinion. Serving as inspector of elections is a role the statute itself creates and assigns to an independent third party; it is not the practice of law either. When a question crosses the line we will say so plainly rather than guess past it.
The statutory text
California statutes are enactments of government and carry no copyright. The text on these pages is reproduced verbatim from the California Legislative Counsel's own published code database, and checked word for word against a second source. Both sources are named on every text block.
It is nonetheless an unofficial reproduction. The official version is the one the Legislative Counsel publishes at leginfo.legislature.ca.gov, and where the two differ, that version governs. Every page links to the official text of the sections it reproduces.
The statutory text is reproduced in English on both language sides of this site. English is what was enacted and English is what governs; a Spanish rendering of a California statute would not be the law, so we do not present one.
What the dates on each page mean
- In force — the date the version of the section we reproduce took effect. A section that has been amended more than once carries the amendment that produced the current text.
- Text verified — the date we last compared our reproduction against the official source, character by character. It is not a promise that the law has not changed since; it is a statement of when we last looked.
- Last checked, on pages that carry commentary rather than text — the date the commentary was last read against the statute it describes.
We review the whole reference quarterly and after any amendment we become aware of. Between reviews a page can be out of date, and the dates are published precisely so you can see how far.
If you find an error, tell us
Write to privacy@quoroom.org with the page and what is wrong. We would rather be corrected than be consistent. A correction to statutory text is made the same day we can verify it, and the verification date on the page is reset so the change is visible rather than silent.
No warranty of currency or completeness
The reference covers the sections it names and no others. It does not cover your governing documents, which frequently impose requirements stricter than the statute; it does not cover federal law, local ordinances, or the corporate law applying to your association except where a page says so; and it describes California only.
Law changes. A statute reproduced accurately in October may be amended in January. Check the dates on the page, and check the official source before relying on anything for a decision that matters.
What is ours and what is not
The statutory text is not ours and not anyone's — it is in the public domain as an edict of government, and you may copy it freely from here or from the official source.
The commentary, structure, explanations, tables and the deadline calculator are our own work and are copyright quoroom.org. You may read, print, cite and link to them. See the terms of use for what that permits in detail.
The typefaces used here — IBM Plex Mono, Poppins and Source Serif 4 — are licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, and the licences are published alongside the font files.
Who publishes this
quoroom.org is published and operated as an independent venture. There is no incorporated entity behind it at present; when that changes, this page will name it, its jurisdiction of registration and its registered address. We would rather say that than print a company name that does not exist.
